Welcome to the very first Magnificent Mama spotlight. I want to use this space to share stories about Mom’s pursuing their passions, overcoming obstacles and reaching their goals.
My first Magnificent Mama is Jenn Wu. Jenn and I go waaay back, before kids, husbands and responsibilities.
Now, Jenn is a very busy Mom of three. Recently, after a highly successful career in sports and entertainments, Jenn now focused on her entrepreneurial adventures, including being part of BeautyCounter Canada (between diapers, school drop-offs and swimming lessons).
Jenn and I talked about the shift in her life, why she wanted to change her focus and what she is doing now. Enjoy!
Hi Jenn! For those of you who don’t know how incredibly talented and fun you are, can you tell them a bit about yourself and your passions?
I’m a mom of 3 living in Markham, Ontario. My kiddies are one month old, four and six years old. What are my passions? That’s a really great question – one that I’m exploring in this phase of my life. I’ve spent so much of the past concentrating on work, and then family, and left little time for myself. So now I would say that what I’m really passionate about is reconnecting with myself and
getting to know what I love again because I’ve lost that along the way. So far, what I’ve discovered is that I really love reading, writing, yoga, and simplicity.
You recently had a third child, congratulations! What has the transition from two to three been like? Any tips for Mom’s to be?
Thanks! Its been fun seeing my kids bond with their little sister. The transition is not as shocking as it was to go from zero to one kid, and since my older kids are in school, it hasn’t been as hard on me during the day managing a newborn and a toddler. As for a tip, I think the biggest tip I can give is to relax and not stress about everything being perfect because it won’t be. I will admit that before the baby was born, I stressed quite a bit about how I would manage all the kids (especially our morning routine), but it turns out I didn’t need to worry as much. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still sometimes crazy but it is fun!
A few years ago, you decided to leave your corporate position? Why did you make this choice? What were the major changes in your life?
My former career of 10+ years was in sports & entertainment, and the demands of working a regular 9-5 plus events multiple times a week left me feeling drained. I was barely spending any waking time at home with my kids, and I wasn’t present when I was home because I was always stressed about work. I really wasn’t being the kind of parent that I wanted to be, and I decided that it was time for a change.
When I had my kids, I always envisioned being the mom that was there to pick up the kids from school, hear all about their days and help with homework before dinner. The reality was that I was dropping them off at 7 am and usually late to pick them up after 6:00. Once we got home, I was rushing around to make dinner, do baths, barely able to help the kids with homework.
I do miss the camaraderie of coworkers and the sense of accomplishment of having a “high-powered career”. But I love being able to be around more for my kids, love the friendships I’ve made with other moms I’ve met at school, and the relationships I’ve formed through my Beautycounter business.
What does your typical day look like?
A typical day in my life starts at 6:30 when I wake up to get ready before the kids get up, and nurse the baby. Then it’s a juggling act of rocking baby, helping the kids with their breakfast and getting dressed. Then it’s off to school for 8:45. After the big kids are in school, the baby and I hang out at home. Often while she naps, I will get some things done around the house, and also work on some of my entrepreneurial projects, so my brain doesn’t turn to mush. The hours while the kids are at school tend to fly by, and before I know it, it is time to pick them up. Then we come home and do that routine that I envisioned – walking home from school, after-school snacks and activities, dinner, puzzles and playing bath and bed. Rinse and repeat the next day!
What do you love about the decision you made? What do you love about being at home with your children?
The best part of my decision was being able to be present for my kids. I love seeing them in their school environment and getting to know their friends.
After leaving your 9-5 (and then some) career did you struggle with anything?
The biggest struggle was totally a mental struggle – so much of my identity was tied up in my former career, and it’s been finding the new way to redefine myself.
Can you tell us a little bit about Beautycounter Canada?Beautycounter is a company that launched in Canada in 2016, and it is a company that is on a mission to change the cosmetics and beauty industry in the US and Canada. We advocate for safer more health protective laws to regulate the personal care industry, educate people about clean living and better beauty, and offer a solution through our high performing products.
I got involved because I was looking for safe, non-toxic products for my kids, and when I learned about ingredients and the lack of regulation in the industry, I was motivated to make some changes in my personal care products. What started out as a way to get amazing products at a discount turned into something that is important to me, and I enjoy being able to earn an income flexibly while having a social impact in my community by advocating for these changes.
What are your favourite Beautycounter products?
I really love our facial oils, and the cleansing balm – its such a versatile product, and so luxurious!
If you had a day to yourself, how would you spend it?
If I had a day to myself, it would include sleep in, a massage/trip to the spa, and some yoga. And sushi for dinner!
Thank you, Jenn for taking the time to chat with me, and special thanks to Mary-Anne Ferry Photography for the amazing pictures of Jenn’s family.
